Self-care has been one thing that we all have been hearing a ton about in recent years. With the help of social media, people have started to share their methods of self-care and take the entire movement more seriously. Believe it or not, self-care started way before 2016 and was focused on race, gender, and class. Understanding the history of self-care is necessary to properly practice it. Our previous blog takes a look into the history of self-care and how it all started. If you haven’t read that blog yet, go back and learn about the root of the concept of self-care. While it may not be as happy and empowering as you may think, it is important to know how to effectively practice self-care.
Once you’re finished learning more about the start of self-care, you can now practice it properly! At TeaZen®, we believe that self-care is extremely important to living a happy and healthy life. We know how important it is to care for yourself mentally and physically, and we want you to understand that as well!
That is why, in this blog, we will be discussing the importance of self-care and different ways you can practice it! Read on to learn more and remember to take some time for yourself today.
Why It Is Important
Social media, media outlets, and our friends have made it very clear that self-care is important. But do you know why it is important? Do you know the benefits it offers? There are so many reasons to practice self-care on a daily basis, but not all of us do. If you have been struggling to find importance in practicing self-care, be sure to continue reading. You need this blog more than anyone!
Self-care can help you develop a better relationship with yourself. You will be able to produce positive feelings and understand your worth. If you recall from our previous blog about the history of self-care, different groups who were being oppressed used self-care as a way to show themselves and the government that they deserved to live and live well. They found their self-worth and made sure to care for themselves because of it. When you practice self-care you are giving yourself the attention you need to live a healthy and happy life. Practicing self-care can help you boost your self-esteem and confidence and allows you to show that your needs matter.
Stress is a silent killer. While we all deal with stress on a regular basis, it can cause more damage to our health than you may expect. Being able to take time to destress is important and can help our overall health. While a little stress in our daily lives isn’t the worst thing, there is a certain level of stress that can push us over the edge. Certain self-care habits and practices can help reduce stress, improving your mood, energy, and overall health. Whatever methods work to reduce stress for you, be sure to do them regularly so that you can enjoy a more stress-free life.
Some people are so extroverted that they have a hard time being alone, but alone time can actually be very therapeutic. While it can be hard to sit alone, this is when many people are able to relax to the point of meditation. They are also given the opportunity to do some self-reflection and better connect with themselves. In one of our previous blogs, we discussed mental wellness and how caring for your spirit and making that deeper connection can help you feel better. Being alone is the perfect time to work on this and practice some self-care. Plus, when you are alone, you can do things that you truly enjoy that you may not do around others, whether that is paint, write, read, knit, or simply lay on the couch listening to your favorite jams. Spending time alone is a great way to reconnect with yourself and improve your well-being.
Self-care is more than just taking a hot bubble bath at the end of the day. It involves all aspects of your health. Self-care includes everything from eating a healthy diet, getting regular physical activity, and working on mental wellness. When you practice all of these aspects of self-care, you will be able to improve your overall health. This will allow you to live a healthier and happier life!
How To Practice
Now that you know a little more about the importance of self-care, we are going to talk about some of the ways you can practice self-care! Take time to add these practices to your daily routine. If you practice self-care for half an hour a day, you will notice a positive change in your life.
As we just mentioned, self-care includes physical health as well. By working out regularly, you will feel better and help take care of your body. Working out is not only great for your body, but it also releases endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that can help trigger a positive feeling in your body. Working out reduces stress, helps you sleep better, and allows you to feel better overall.
Eating a healthy diet is another way to practice self-care. If you haven’t noticed, junk food can make us not feel great in a variety of ways. Changing your diet to include more vegetables and fruits is a great start. But this does not mean you have to cut out your favorite treats all together. Sometimes self-care can include eating that cookie without feeling bad about it. Enjoy that cookie!
Taking time out of your day to relax and meditate can help you clear your mind and release some built up stress. Even just sitting and deep breathing for a few minutes a day can really put you back on track to a happy and healthy day! Meditating is a huge part of self-care because it allows us to really relax and clear our minds of the daily stresses we are always facing.
Some people do not get anything beneficial out of journaling, but for others, it is an amazing release. If you enjoy journaling, take some time out of your day, at least once a week, to write down your thoughts. Write anything you want — something on your mind, something that made you laugh, something that is bothering you, or anything else that spills onto those pages. Sometimes all we need to do to feel refreshed is pour all of our feeling out onto paper. When we bottle up our emotions we tend to carry that with us day after day. Journaling gives us a place to just let it all out. Often times, you will find that once you write it all down, it will no longer bother you.
While we did discuss that being alone is a great act of self-care, sometimes surrounding yourself with a great friend or someone special is necessary. If you have been feeling alone, make plans with a friend that you haven’t seen in a while. Meet for lunch or coffee and simply talk. Catch up with your friend, stay off your phone, and vent if you need to. Making that connection with someone is a great way to reduce stress and forget about all your problems for the time being. Plus, if your friend is funny, laughing is another great way to reduce stress. They can also give you some much-needed advice.
If you have a hobby that you rarely practice anymore, make some time this week to do it! No matter what your hobby may be, doing something you love is a great way to practice self-care. Whether it is knitting, coloring, reading, writing, playing an instrument, or baking, just do it! Make some time in your week to enjoy your favorite hobby once again. You will not regret it! If you do not have a hobby, you can always find one. Think about something you have always wanted to try and do it. Just make sure it doesn’t cause you more stress.
A spa day is a great way to practice self-care, but we just wanted to make sure you knew it wasn’t the only way. You don’t even have to spend money to enjoy a spa day. Simply pamper yourself at home! Take a bubble bath with the bath bomb you have been wanting to use, light some candles, pour yourself a glass of wine, grab some music, and relax. You could also make a homemade facemask and relax by the fire with a cup of tea. You can even add a dropper full of one of our green tea concentrate products to your tea and enjoy the beneficial ingredients! Everyone deserves a day of pampering, even if they are the ones pampering themselves.
These are a few of the many ideas you can use to start practicing self-care. There are endless options for you, the goal is simply to take care of your physical and mental well-being. Remember that you deserve to take care of your needs by practicing self-care. Hopefully, you now understand where self-care started, why it is important, and why everyone should practice it.
At TeaZen, we believe that practicing self-care should be everyone’s main priority. It is important and every single person should do it. While most people think “self-care” is a women’s thing, men can and should practice self-care as well! It is important to living a happy and healthy life. Be sure to add a self-care practice to your daily routine!
