How to Reduce Your Single-Use Plastic Consumption – Part 1

Single-use plastics are plastic items, such as plastic bags, straws, and utensils, that are used once before being thrown away. These items are becoming a huge problem for humans, animals, and the environment. They are polluting our planet, affect our health, and cause many additional problems.

In our previous blog, we discussed single-use plastics and why you should stop using them and make the switch to reusable and sustainable items. If you missed that blog, be sure to go back and read it now! We discuss what is considered a single-use plastic and why these items are bad for people, animals, and the environment. We believe that with knowledge comes power, so when you better understand the problem with these plastics, you will have the power to make a positive change.

At TeaZen®, we care deeply about this planet and the people, animals, and environments that are a part of it. We sell green tea concentrate products that are easy to add to any drink. Our concentrates come in small glass bottles that provide you with 60 servings. We chose to sell concentrates because it allowed us to package our product in one small glass bottle rather than 60 plastic bottles. We are doing our part to reduce single-use plastics and help save our planet, we want you to do the same!

In this blog, we are going to talk about some of the ways you can reduce your single-use plastic consumption. If you are looking for more ways to be environmentally friendly or you haven’t even started using reusable items yet and want to know where to start, read on!

Choose Reusable

One of the simplest ways to reduce your plastic use is to choose reusable. If you don’t think there is a reusable option for something you use daily, you are wrong! With all of the eco-friendly companies and Earth-lovers out there trying to find solutions, there is a reusable option for just about everything.

Shopping Bags

When you go grocery shopping or shopping for anything else, it is likely that you will receive a plastic bag or multiple. Cutting back on plastic bags is an easy way to reduce your plastic use. Reusable cloth bags are a great alternative! According to 4ocean, there are more than one million bags being used across the globe every day and about 500 billion plastic bags being produced annually. Reusable bags can be used for your groceries or while shopping at the mall. If you forget your reusable bags and only have a few items, you can skip the bag completely and carry your items! Keep your reusable bags in your car to ensure that you have them ready to go whenever you feel the need to run to the store.

Plastic Straws

Plastic straws have recently become an environmental enemy, especially after seeing the viral video of the turtle with a plastic straw stuck in its nostril. The 4ocean article also mentions that more than 500 million plastic straws are used every single day. Just let that sink in. Over 500 million! There is really no reason to use a straw when you drink, but if you really need or want one, there are reusable options! Many companies have been developing reusable straw options, including steel, bamboo, and glass. Some steel straws even come in a compact case, allowing you to easily attach it to your keychain and carry it around with you wherever you go. So when you do feel the need to use a stray, you have an eco-friendly option ready! If you don’t need a straw, be sure to let your waiter or bartender know when you order your drink.

Water Bottles

Plastic water bottles are another single-use plastic that there is no need for. There are so many different reusable water bottle options to choose from that there is really no reason to still use single-use bottles. You can find reusable water bottles in a variety of sizes, shapes, styles, materials, and colors, which should make it easy for you to find one you want and to quit using single-use bottles. The 4ocean article also mentions that a single person using a reusable water bottle instead of single-use bottles can save as much as 170 bottles from being produced each year! See? Even a single person and a small, simple change can make a huge difference!

Food Containers

If you pack your lunch for work or school, it is likely that you use plastic baggies for your different food items. While this may be convenient and easy, try switching to glass food containers. These come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and styles, allowing you to find the perfect one for your food. These are reusable, washable, and can save you money and help the planet.

No matter what type of reusable items you are looking for, we are sure it is out there. EarthHero is a one-stop shop for all the reusable and sustainable items you may need to be more eco-friendly. Start shopping through their store to find the reusable items you need!

Avoid Plastics

Another way that you can cut back on your plastic use is to minimize the amount of plastic you purchase. Avoid snacks and other items that use excess plastic. You may walk through your grocery store and see pre-cut pineapple in a plastic container or a head of lettuce wrapped in plastic. There is no need for this and you should avoid purchasing items like this. Instead, buy a full pineapple and cut it yourself, it will only take you an extra five minutes. You can store it in one of the glass containers that you purchased for your lunches to keep it fresh.

Choose Cardboard Over Plastic

Cardboard is a better option for several reasons and you should choose it over plastic whenever possible. Cardboard is easier to recycle and will biodegrade over time, unlike plastic. While plastic can be recycled, buying cardboard when possible will help to reduce the amount of plastic that needs to be produced.

These are a few of the many things that you can do to use less plastic and help make a small but mighTEA difference in the world. Even just switching to more reusable items is a great place to start and can allow you to make a big difference! Join TeaZen in our mission to help this planet thrive. And be sure to check out our green tea concentrates to add to your new reusable water bottle! In our next blog, we will go over some additional way to use less plastic as well as some of the positive plastic changes that have already been made in the world!
