The History of Earth Day

Earth Day started as an environmental movement in 1970. According to Live Science, the idea for Earth Day was proposed by the Senator of Wisconsin at the time, Gaylord Nelson. The idea began after seeing the damage that was caused by a massive oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. The goal of the first Earth Day was to teach the public about the environment.

Nelson partnered with Denis Hayes, a politically active recent graduate of Stanford University, U.S. Rep. Pete McCloskey of California, and a national coordinator. Together, with a staff of 85 people, they were able to rally 20 million people throughout the U.S. on April 20, 1970. Protests were held, people gathered in public areas to talk about the environment, and they discussed ways to defend the planet. It was during this time that people who cared deeply about the environment realized that they were not alone in this fight.

Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. According to Earth Day Network, ten years later, a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hayes to organize another campaign. This is when Earth Day went global. 200 million people in 141 countries gathered and made environmental issues a major focus. This improved recycling efforts worldwide and paved the way for the United Nations Earth Summit in 1992.

This is just a brief history of Earth Day but gives you an idea of how it came about. It is amazing how something so important can spread worldwide and connect people from all over the world. Now that you know more about Earth Day, let’s talk about why it matters so much.

The Importance

Earth Day is so important because it helps to spread more awareness about our planet’s problems and what can and should be done to help it. The Live Science article mentions that many people across the U.S. don’t believe climate change is as serious of an issue as it is and that protecting the environment should not be a priority over energy production. This is what makes Earth Day so important. It allows us to spread the word and raise awareness about these issues and help us work toward protecting the planet.

Since the first Earth Day, there have been many policy changes and global improvement, helping us make a positive impact on the world. According to an article from Conserve Energy Future, Earth Day is the largest civic observance in the world, with more than 1 billion people participating in Earth Day activities. Because Earth Day has become such an important part of our world, it has been able to help accomplish many different things.

The Accomplishments

It is no surprise that the largest worldly observance has made some changes and led to many accomplishments. Knowing what has been accomplished from a single day each year can help us realize the big impact humans can make to better this world and help protect the planet. While we already mentioned the Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts, there are many other accomplishments Earth Day has contributed to. An article from Resnet include these accomplishments:

  • The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976
  • The Federal Occupational Health and Safety Act aimed at “in-plant pollution”
  • The start of recycling
  • A more energy-efficient form of energy
  • The requirement of catalytic convertors in all U.S. cars
  • Hybrid and electric cars
  • Control over the depletion of the ozone layer
  • A 40 percent drop in SO2 emissions
  • An increase in awareness of environmental issues

These are just a few examples of what can be done when the entire world comes together with one idea in mind. There are so many different things that Earth Day has been able to bring to light and help us make necessary changes. We simply hope to keep improving with each Earth Day that goes by. Which leads us to our next point — how you can celebrate Earth Day.
